Islas Pewter

An hour outside of Mexico City, you will find Islas Pewter in the state of Hidalgo. The business was founded by the family patriarch who continues to work side by side with his sons and daughter and their 18 employees. During the last decade, they have all worked together to produce the high quality pewter products that are now being exported around the world.

The processes of melting  pewter, packing and filling a mold, and polishing the metal until it shines requires care and attention by experienced hands. The beauty of their products and design are evidence of their commitment to high quality and customer satisfaction.

Mujeres Alfareras Tlallicihuatl (MAT)

The artists who comprise MAT or 'Women Artisans of the Earth', use their art to express their creativity as well as to demonstrate the important economic contribution that women can make to their families. Founder Rita Resendiz began working with clay in 1985 after losing her home and job during a devastating earthquake. She received a grant to build workspace for the handmade clay molds and kiln. This workspace divides her living space from the art studio.

In 1994 Rita focused her artistic efforts on creating greater equality for women in her local community. Today MAT operates as an artists’ co-op providing aspiring women the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally while at the same time working to support their families. Co-op members share the responsibilities of mixing the clay and paints as well as crafting and decorating the pieces. Their designs have special meanings stemming from ancient Aztec symbols and are often embellished with a personal touch by the artisan.

Rita's efforts to promote social awareness and gender equality have been recognized throughout Mexico. This is the co-op’s first experience exporting and they are excited to share their art with us. Sales of their products will help the business grow economically, therefore providing economic advantages to the women and their families. It will also allow them to continue the pursuit of social justice in Mexico.

While the majority of their pieces are crafted by co-op members, some one-of-a-kind pieces, designed and created by Rita, are noted next to the description of the item.

Cazares Pewter

The Cazares family lives and works in a modest hacienda in an outlying neighborhood of Mexico City. Each family member has a specific role working in the business, whether it is in sales, manufacturing or design.

Ten years ago, Sr. Cazares’ was fired by his employer when they decided that health care coverage for the entire family would be too costly (because one of their children is handicapped). The Cazares family then decided to venture into the pewter business.

Family members design and manufacture the pewter pieces and local artists add the oil paintings, which contribute to the elegance of these unique decorative items

Primavera Glass

Tucked into a spacious urban home in the heart of Mexico City, La Primavera operates both their administrative offices and showroom, but is named after the ranch in Hidalgo where their glass and iron pieces are created. Founded in 1992, La Primavera or the Spring, competes with the growing trend of glassware by keeping their designs focused on the customer. Their pieces incorporate function with a rustic Mexican style.

Mexican glass blowers use lead-free, un-tempered and recycled glass. No two pieces are alike in size or shape or design which adds to their unique appearance.
